my compost bin has chunks of ice in it, isn't it supposed to warm up along with the decomposing process? ?
i'm wondering what i'm doing wrong...i have lots of "browns" and "greens" in there. is there another additive that i should put in?
When temperatures get very cold, the decomposition process (and the heat generated) slows way down. In fact, often after a week or so of warm weather in the Spring when I go out to turn my compost pile I find the material in the middle to be nearly frozen solid.
I addition to "browns and greens", add a few shovels full of soil to introduce the microorganisms which perform the decomposition of the raw materials. Keep the compost damp. You can cover it with a black tarp or sheet of plastic to increase the temperature in cold weather.
